Where true equality exists
Empowering Change through Collaborative Action
We, at Aequitas, firmly believe in the power of unity to bring about meaningful change. Our focus is on addressing critical issues affecting children and families, specifically within child welfare systems, family court processes, and child maintenance arrangements. We recognize that these systems, while designed with good intentions, often fall short of their goals, leaving vulnerable children and families in need of greater support and protection.
At the core of our approach is a commitment to collaboration. We believe that by bringing together diverse stakeholders, including parent advocacy groups, legal providers, child welfare agencies, and government agencies, we can create a more just and equitable society. Our collaborative approach is based on the following key principles:
- Stakeholder Engagement: We actively seek out and engage with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure that diverse voices and perspectives are represented in our work.
- Research and Data Analysis: We utilize data to inform our advocacy efforts, identify systemic issues, and track our progress.
- Policy Advocacy: We leverage research findings and stakeholder input to advocate for policy reforms that promote fairness, equity, and the well-being of children and families.
Our Initial Focus Areas
Child Welfare Systems
We recognize the urgent need for reform within child welfare systems. These systems are often beleaguered by challenges such as inadequate early intervention and prevention programs, funding gaps and resource constraints, and insufficient support for children in care. Our collaborative approach seeks to address these challenges by:
- Enhancing Early Intervention and Prevention Programs: We advocate for increased investment in research and program development to create and implement evidence-based early intervention programs that effectively address risk factors for child abuse and neglect.
- Ensuring Adequate Funding for Child Protection Services: We engage in advocacy efforts to secure increased government funding for child welfare agencies and explore alternative funding sources to enhance the financial stability of child welfare services.
- Promoting the Well-Being of Children in Care: We advocate for high-quality foster care and adoptive placements, support the development of therapeutic foster care programs, and ensure access to essential services for children in care.
Family Court Processes
We envision a family court system that is just, compassionate, and child-centred. The current system, often entrenched in an adversarial framework, can exacerbate conflict and leave families emotionally scarred. Our collaborative approach seeks to transform family court processes by:
- Reducing Delays: We advocate for streamlined procedures, case management tools, and alternative dispute resolution methods to minimize anxiety and uncertainty for families.
- Creating Child-Friendly Environments: We believe that family courts should be welcoming and supportive spaces for children, providing appropriate waiting areas, support services, and accommodations during court proceedings.
- Enhancing the Role of Child Welfare Professionals: We stress the importance of integrating the expertise of child welfare professionals into every stage of the family court process.
- Promoting Parent Engagement: We encourage open communication and collaboration between parents and court professionals, empowering parents to participate actively in the process.
- Ensuring Child Well-Being: We advocate for a holistic assessment of the child’s needs and a commitment to finding solutions that promote their long-term well-being.
Child Maintenance Arrangements
We believe that the well-being of children hinges significantly on adequate child maintenance. The current system, however, often falls short, leaving many parents grappling with inconsistent calculations, overpayments, underpayments, and even non-payment. Our collaborative approach seeks to address these challenges by:
- Promoting Fair and Equitable Calculations: We advocate for clear and consistent guidelines for calculating child maintenance, ensuring that children receive the financial support they need.
- Addressing Overpayments and Underpayments: We work to identify and resolve issues that lead to overpayments or underpayments, minimizing financial strain for both paying and receiving parents.
- Preventing Non-Payment: We address the issue of non-payment by advocating for stronger enforcement mechanisms and support services for parents facing financial hardship.
Our Commitment to Collaboration
Our collaborative approach is rooted in the belief that together, we can achieve more than we can alone. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, we can harness their collective wisdom, expertise, and resources to create a more just and equitable society for children and families.
We are committed to fostering a culture of collaboration within our organization and in our work with partners. We believe that collaboration is essential for:
- Building Consensus: By bringing together diverse perspectives, we can identify common ground and build consensus on critical issues.
- Generating Innovative Solutions: Collaboration fosters creativity and innovation, leading to more effective solutions to complex challenges.
- Amplifying Impact: By working together, we can amplify our impact and achieve more meaningful change.
Our Vision for the Future
We envision a future where all children have the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances. We believe that by working together, we can create a society where child welfare systems provide comprehensive support and protection for vulnerable children and families, Family court processes are just, compassionate, and child-centred and child maintenance arrangements are fair, equitable, and ensure that children receive the financial support they need to thrive.
We invite all organizations and individuals committed to the well-being of children and families to join us in this collaborative effort. Together, we can create a brighter future for all.
We believe that our collaborative approach, grounded in the principles of unity, data-driven decision-making, and stakeholder engagement, can bring about meaningful change. We are committed to working tirelessly to achieve our vision of a just and equitable society for children and families.
